Hero

This is my favorite of Zhang's films so far, but the ridiculous acrobatics still bother me... alot. It just doesn't add anything to the movie for me I guess. But I did like the plot at least, and that's a very important part of any movie.
The only problem that I had with the plot was that the protagonist is nameless, I feel like that's so overdone nowadays, like in the book The Invisible Man and other things too. Other than that though, the plot seemed well constructed and had an interesting form (memories/stories).
One thing that I did appreciate with the cinematography was how Zhang used color in the flashbacks. For example, he used red extensively in the main character's memories, blue in Sword's (i think?) and different colors in other ones to make it easy for the viewer to follow who was telling the story, and also provide some insight into the characters themselves.

I also agree with you that once again there was too much fancy things happening that kind of distracted you from the story, which was very well put together, atleast better than the last Zhang movie I saw. I also really liked how in the flash backs they changed the color depending on who was having the flash back and what was happening in the flashback, it really let you as the viewer know that it was a flashback and it kind of set the tone for it. Overall I though It was a very well put together movie.

I thought it was a little boring. There were cool parts like the fight scenes but in between I kind of wished it would pick up the pace. I disagree with Jimmy I don't think there was too much fanciness if you compare it to house of flying daggers, since this one has less CGI (and less noticeable CGI) and it is told through memories so it makes sense that things are exaggerated.

I guess your right that there has to be some sort of CGI to separate the flashbacks from the real part of the movie, without it they might just mix together and you wouldnt know whats what. I also agree with you carter that sometimes I wished it would pick up the pace at times it was almost boring to watch, and others it was great and really exciting.
